We are really excited about our coaching staff for the 2019 season!!



Coach Ken Hansen is in his eighth summer with Oakton Otters dive team and has coached the Otters Winter Dive program for 11 years.  Ken has been an Assistant Dive Coach for Oakton High School for 11 seasons and was previously Head Dive Coach for Madison High School. He currently coaches for Dominion Dive and coaches diving classes for FCPA at Oak Marr. Ken was the top diver at Oakton High School in his senior year, placed 2nd at Districts, and was the only diver to qualify for and participate in States that year. He also broke the school's 11-dive record.  In 2008, Ken teamed up with coach Cheryl Meltz to compete in The Masters National Championships and win the Masters Diving National title in Mixed Synchronized Diving.  Ken also was the 2008 Masters Diving Platform National Champion.  



Assistant Coach Liam Klopfenstein is returning for his fourth summer coaching the Otters. He is a recent graduate of Oakton High School and is going into his sophomore year at James Madison University, where he studies Theatre. Before graduating, Liam dove with the Oakton Otters for nine summers and coached for the past three. In his NVSL career, Liam competed in Divisionals almost every summer and in the All Star championship meet three times. In his senior year, Liam placed 1st in the division for senior boys, and 12th in All Stars. Liam was an active swimmer for the Oakton Otters as well, competing in the All Star Relays meet in 2012 and 2014. Liam dove for the Oakton High School Varsity Swim and Dive Team all four years of his high school career, and served as Captain of the dive team his Junior and Senior year. Every year he qualified and competed in the District and Regional championship meets, and received the coaches award his sophomore year. He looks forward to an amazing summer as a D1 team. Go Otters!


Sarah Gurley is returning to the dive coach staff this year and will also continue to dive in the Senior age group. She will be starting her senior year at Paul VI high school this fall. She is very involved in the Fine Arts program and has been a part of the National Art Society for over two years now. She has been a member of the Oakton dive team for 5 years and the Junior Olympic Team at the Mason Dive Academy competing on the National level for 3 years.  Sarah has participated in the All Star meet each year on the team and placed first 3 years in a row. Currently, she is the two time VISAA State Dive Champion, while breaking the 21 year old VISAA State Championship record, was named an All-Met Honorable Mention by the Washington Post, and is an All American contender. She is very excited about coaching again this summer and is looking forward to another great season with the Otters!


Spencer Dearman in a new member of the coaching staff this year. He will be beginning his sophomore year at Oakton High School this fall. In addition to diving, he is involved in cooking as well as robotics. He has been a member of the Oakton Otter Dive family for 4 years and has been competing with Dominion Dive Club at a Junior Olympic level for 3 years. Spencer has participated in the All-Star meet 3 times and placed first last year. As a freshman this year, he placed 13th at the NHSL State Championship meet, and reached an All-American qualifying score. He is looking forward to this exciting opportunity to help with the coaching staff, and another amazing season with the Oakton Otters!



Cheryl Meltz-Kroopnick helped launch the Oakton Otters Dive Team in 2005 and has been coaching the Otters since the team’s inception, including running the Otters’ Winter Dive program.  Cheryl is also the Head Coach of Oakton High School’s Varsity Dive Team and has coached at the Junior Olympic level with York Dive Club and Dominion Dive Club.  As a former Division I college diver for Colgate University where she was conference champion on both 1 meter and 3 meter and a National Finalist for the “NCAA Woman of the Year”, as well as a 5-time Masters’ Diving World Champion. Most recently she competed in the 2019 Masters Spring Championship and took gold in 1 meter, second in Grand Masters, and third in 3 meter. Cheryl brings a wealth of diving knowledge as an athlete, as well as 27 years of coaching experience at all levels of the sport.  She is very excited for another wonderful summer dive season!


Blaise is going into his sophomore year at Oakton High School. This will be my his 8th season diving with Oakton Swim and Racquet Club. Blaise also dove for Oakton High School this winter and had a great experience, and he is looking forward to this dive season at OSRC because we will be in Division 1!
